Sleeping well is critical to feeling refreshed and energized throughout the day; unfortunately, a good night’s sleep is illusive for many people. There are a number of methods for improving sleeping habits, but one that is commonly overlooked is the design of your bedroom. Creating a relaxing atmosphere has a psychological influence on your mind and impacts the quality of your sleep. Redesigning your bedroom may seem like a daunting task, but with a few simple tips, you can make a big difference in the room that will contribute to a good night’s sleep and help you live better.

Choose a Quality Mattress

The bed is the most used furniture in the room, and a quality mattress makes a huge difference in how well you sleep. Look for a mattress that feels comfortable to you and that provides enough support to keep your neck and spine in proper alignment.

Control the Lighting

Lighting sets the atmosphere in a room, and having proper lighting in your bedroom goes a long way toward creating a relaxing space. Use a dimmer switch so you can adjust the lighting and lower it in the evening; smart lights are also a good investment. They subtly change colors, displaying relaxing colors in the evening and colors to help you wake up and feel alert in the morning.

Separate the Workspace

Your bedroom is a place for relaxing and should not be chaotic. Keep your room clutter free and remove anything work related; this includes children’s toys, paperwork, and that huge pile of laundry. Your bedroom should be organized with everything stored away to create a clean, refreshing area that is a retreat from the craziness of life.

Coordinate Colors

Color evokes emotions and impacts the way you wind down at the end of the day. Choose warmer, cozy colors for fall and winter, and bright pops of oranges, greens, yellows, and fuchsia for spring.

Change Accent Pieces

Use accents to change the feel of your bedroom for the seasons. Switch out heavy winter blankets for lighter blankets in the spring, and have different color accent pieces that are easy to change throughout the year.

Be Aware of Room Size

Bulky furniture in a small bedroom makes the room feel smaller and more cramped. Create a relaxed feel by reducing the amount of furniture and choosing pieces that are less cumbersome to open up the room and make it feel less cluttered.

Go with the Flow

Consider the functional elements of your room when positioning furniture; avoid blocking windows and access to the bathroom or closet doors. Keep your layout comfortable and functional for the best results.

A little bit of life organization and careful design go a long way toward helping you create a bedroom crafted for relaxation and good sleep. When you think of your bedroom, the thoughts that come to mind should be words like comfortable, cozy, and refreshing. With these tips, you can transform your bedroom into a relaxing haven.
