Keeping organized during a move can feel quite challenging. But with a little planning ahead of time, it doesn't have to be a huge headache. Here are some tips that will help you keep track of everything and keep your sanity during the move:

1) Use color coding.
You can color code boxes with different colored tape or stickers. Assign each a room a color and be consistent about using it. This will make it vastly easier to keep track of what goes in each room. Color-coded boxes can be identified at a glance, from a distance. Make sure you make a list from the start that assigns the colors to different rooms. This will help prevent you from using the same color for two rooms without realizing it. Then, keep track of the list so you can reference it when unpacking.

2) Clearly label all boxes.
In addition to color coding the boxes, make sure to write a general description of the contents on the outside of each box. This will help you tell books from fragile knickknacks in the living room. Safety tip: Think carefully about how to label boxes that contain valuables. Although you want to be able to remember which box contains valuables, you do not want thieves to be able to readily tell which boxes they should steal first. So try to avoid specifically naming expensive items, like "gold jewelry." Use a label that will mean something to you but will mean nothing to stranger.

3) Have an "Open First" box or three.
You will need to know where your sheets are and where your bathroom essentials are in order to be able to sleep comfortably the first night. Make sure you clearly label these boxes and load them on the truck last so you can readily find them. It really sucks to want to go to bed after a long, hard day of moving only to discover that you are unable to find your bedding and your toothbrush.

4) When in doubt, throw it out.
When you are packing, you will come across things you forgot you had. There is nothing worse than packing an item, moving it someplace new, unpacking it and then finally deciding to get rid of it. It will also be easier to sell or donate items while still in your current home, where you are familiar with your options, then in a brand new home. Having less to pack will also make it easier to keep organized during a move.

5) Use plastic storage bins to pack and keep.
Toys, Christmas decorations and items from the garage can be put in large plastic storage tubs. Then toss in some packing paper, tape them shut and label them. There will be minimal unpacking at the new place and fewer cardboard boxes to haul to the dumpster.

Although moving can be stressful, it doesn't have to be a terrible experience. Keeping organized during a move can help keep stress levels down.
